Dentist Office Tooth Whitening vs. Take Home Kits

The brightness of your smile is an important attribute. A dazzling, white smile can capture a person’s attention, and can increase your self-confidence in your interactions with others. If you want to remove years of tooth discolorations, you have two main options: in-office power bleaching and customized take-home trays.

In-Office Power Bleaching

If you want quick, dramatic results, in-office power bleaching is the method for you. Though you will be able to see improvements in an hour, in-office power bleaching requires two 60-minute treatments to lighten your teeth as many as 16 shades. During this procedure, a concentrated peroxide gel will be placed on your teeth and activated with a special light source.

The concentrated hydrogen peroxide gel used with in-office power bleaching provides the longest-lasting results of all the tooth whitening treatments available today. It is also the only method that is effective for removing tetracycline stains in a short period of time.

Power bleaching works by revitalizing your tooth's ability to absorb oxygen. Oxygen from the bleaching solution will be absorbed into your tooth, breaking stain molecules into tiny white particles. Though this technique requires more time and effort than other whitening treatments, with at-home touch ups every few months, the results can last indefinitely.

Customized Take-Home Trays

Customized take-home trays are not the same as over-the-counter bleaching products that you can purchase at a drug store. These special trays are created in a dental laboratory using an impression of your natural teeth. Therefore, your trays will fit snugly and accurately, ensuring the most effective treatment.

These trays utilize a high-concentration peroxide gel that you will place on your teeth in intervals of 15-20 minutes. The gel will either be pre-loaded into your trays or stored in syringes that you will add to your trays just before you put them on your teeth. The powerful solution will penetrate your tooth enamel down into your dentin, effectively bleaching your teeth an average of four to five shades. Expect to see results anywhere from seven to 30 days after application.
