Tooth Whitening Options
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
There are dozens of tooth whitening products on the market today, each of them promising to give you a brighter, whiter smile. They come in many forms:
- Toothpastes
- Bleaching strips
- Mouthwashes
- Bleaching trays
- In-office treatment systems
Not all tooth whitening options are equal. Some are much more effective than others. It is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of all of your options before deciding which whitening system is right for you.
Over-the-Counter Treatments
These include any toothpastes, bleaching strips, mouthwashes, or generic whitening systems you can buy at the store without a prescription. Most, if not all of these contain a certain concentration of hydrogen peroxide. The Food and Drug Administration limits the maximum concentration of hydrogen peroxide allowed in these products. These lower concentrations are usually not enough to remove difficult stains. Many of these products can also cause a great deal of tooth sensitivity, making them less desirable than in-office treatments.
In-Office Treatments
There are many different in-office, professional tooth whitening systems available to brighten your smile. The amount of bleaching power any whitening gel has depends on its concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Only in-office, professional systems provide the concentrations necessary to effectively remove stains to provide you with a dazzling white smile.
The Kurthy Deep Bleaching System
Dr. Firouzi uses Dr. Rod Kurthy’s Deep Bleaching system on his patients’ teeth, as well as his own. He has tried many of the professional tooth whitening systems on the market and has found the Kurthy system to be the most effective. It requires only two dental visits and is the only system that is effective in treating congenital and tetracycline-related tooth discoloration. The Kurthy method also causes less tooth sensitivity than other systems.
