Pittsburgh Teeth Whitening

Questions About Teeth Whitening

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

I have heard that tooth bleaching can be painful. Is this true?

All tooth whitening systems cause some degree of tooth sensitivity. The amount of discomfort depends on the person. Some of our patients report feeling very little, if any discomfort. We apply a tooth desensitizer to your teeth after the treatment to help with this condition. Any tooth sensitivity should subside within 24 hours following your treatment.

Do whitening and bleaching procedures damage your teeth?

In-office professional tooth whitening systems do not damage your teeth. Many of our patients have had several bleaching treatments and we have noticed no negative effects on their teeth, nor have they reported any long-term changes in tooth sensitivity. Clinical studies have shown bleaching techniques to cause no damage to tooth enamel, even after repeated treatments.

Should I be concerned about my teeth becoming too white?

Many first-time tooth whitening patients feel as though they should go as white as possible. We usually advise against this because it does not look natural on most people. Teeth that are too white can turn out to be just as embarrassing as discolored teeth. Dr. Firouzi will work with you to determine how white you should go.

How long will my teeth stay white after treatment?

This will depend on a few things. If you are a smoker and regularly drink coffee, dark teas, colas, and red wine, then you should not expect to maintain your new smile for long. Even if you abstain from such products, you will eventually need follow-up treatments to keep your smile looking white.

Can deep bleaching get rid of all types of tooth discoloration?

Some conditions do not respond well to many of the professional tooth whitening options available. Teeth that have become discolored because of trauma or as side-effects of certain antibiotics and other medications may not benefit much from bleaching. In some cases, porcelain veneers may be your best option for restoring your smile.
