Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

Porcelain inlays and onlays are dental fillings made out of a porcelain material which closely mirrors the properties of your natural teeth. In the past, when a cavity was removed, the tooth was filled with amalgam or another metallic substance, resulting in the appearance of ugly metal blotches on your teeth.

Advances in cosmetic dentistry have enabled Pittsburgh cosmetic dentist Dr. Babak Firouzi to provide you with filling options that eliminate the unsightly appearance created by metal fillings. With porcelain inlays and onlays, no one will ever know your teeth have been treated.

Benefits of Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

Some of the advantages of onlays and inlays include:

  • Dr. Firouzi will not have to remove as much of your original tooth, preserving your natural tooth structure
  • Inlays and onlays blend in with your teeth, so you will still have a vibrant smile
  • Porcelain inlays and onlays are stain resistant
  • Inlays and onlays do not shrink or expand, so they will not become loose over time
  • Inlays and onlays are as easy to clean as your regular teeth
  • Porcelain is a very sturdy material, which reduces the likelihood that your fillings will get damaged over time

Procedure

Dr. Firouzi can complete your porcelain inlays or onlays two visits to his office. On your first visit, Dr. Firouzi will take a mold of your damaged tooth, which will be sent to a lab where the inlay or onlay is created. An inlay is needed if the porcelain needs to be bonded with the center of the tooth. An onlay is needed if one or more points of the biting surface of the tooth require treatment.

During your second visit, Dr. Firouzi will attach the inlay or onlay to your tooth and make sure that it is properly fitted and bonded.
