Pittsburgh Dental Crown

Dental Crown Options

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

As you age, your teeth begin to wear down, causing them to become decayed, cracked or chipped. To treat a damaged tooth, Pittsburgh cosmetic dentist Dr. Babak Firouzi may recommend a dental crown.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is used to cover a damaged tooth and restore its strength and durability. Dental crowns are a good option to repair:

  • Cracked teeth
  • Fractured teeth
  • Fragile teeth

Crowns can also be used to anchor a dental bridge that is replacing a missing tooth, or to cover a tooth after a root canal.

Types of Dental Crowns

In the past, all dental crowns were made of metal. However, recent advances in cosmetic dentistry have enabled Dr. Firouzi to provide you with crown options that will look more natural and maintain your beautiful smile.

Gold crowns are the most commonly used types of dental crowns. They offer you the following benefits:

  • Strength
  • Durability
  • Comfort

The main drawback to gold crowns is that they are more noticeable in your mouth. If you prefer to have a crown that blends in with your natural tooth color, you may want to go with a porcelain crown. They can be used to alter discolored teeth as well as repair teeth.

Porcelain crowns are weaker than gold crowns. While they are good choices for front teeth, they often do not have the strength needed for the biting and chewing of back teeth.

An excellent choice for a dental crown that is very strong but looks like a normal tooth is the porcelain-fused-to-metal crown. This crown blends the strength of a gold crown with the aesthetics of a porcelain crown. This crown can be used in both front and back teeth, and the crown is virtually invisible.

Dr. Firouzi will go over all of your dental crown options with you at your initial consultation, and he will recommend the best one to meet your aesthetic goals and oral health needs.
