Care of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are an excellent way to improve the shape, color, position and/ or size of your front teeth. While porcelain veneers are not permanent, taking proper care of them will increase their lifespan so that you get the most out of your cosmetic enhancement.

Care of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers commonly provide you with excellent results for approximately five to ten years. However, taking the time to maintain your veneers will ensure that at the very least they push the upper boundaries of that time frame. If you are very diligent in the care of your veneers, they may even last longer than ten years.

The following steps will help preserve your porcelain veneers so that you maximize the duration of your cosmetic treatment:

  • Brush your teeth three times a day and floss daily, just as you would with your natural teeth.
  • Make sure you maintain proper care of your gums to prevent inflammation and receding. If your gum line recedes, it may adversely affect the appearance of your veneers.
  • Porcelain veneers can be damaged from biting or chewing hard objects. Be careful when eating hard food that may destroy your veneers.
  • Wear a mouth guard when playing sports where injury to your teeth could occur. This will provide you with extra protection for your porcelain veneers.
  • Do not clench or grind your teeth. This can cause you to chip or break your veneers. A plastic night guard can be created for you to wear while you sleep which will prevent your grinding and clenching.
  • Avoid staining liquids which can result in discoloration around the edges of your veneers.

Maintaining proper care of your porcelain veneers is relatively easy and will ensure that you get the most from your investment.
